Textile Pattern, 2020

The artist was approached to design a textile for a local hotel. Since the theme for this hotel project was “local makers”, the artist felt it was important for the textile to reflect an element of handcraft. The motif was created with a handcrafted method, drawing and watercolor, and then manipulated digitally. The artist wanted the pattern to contain an element of imperfection, to know that it was created by a person and not a machine. This pattern incorporates the juxtaposition of perfect geometry with imperfect watercolor stripes. The bottom photos show the process. The artist created several series of options for the design. After a motif was chosen for the design, other jewel tone color ways were explored. Ultimately, the color palette was chosen to coordinate with the hotel room’s artwork and furniture. After the design was complete, the pattern was sent to a printing company called WeaveUp to be printed on a commercial fabric. After choosing the final colors, the pattern was printed on several different types of commercial fabric to see how the printed colors were affected by the color of the fabric. The chosen fabric was then installed on the hotel room desk chairs and pillows.

Yardage, 2019

These patterns were created for a collective show titled YARDAGE in 2019. All the designs were created with hand drawings and then scanned to the computer to create the repeat pattern and printed on fabric. Several pieces are part of the Family Portraits series.
